31st GBIF Governing Board meeting hosted by BIOPOLIS-CIBIO and the University of Porto

News

From 30 September to 4 October, BIOPOLIS/CIBIO (Biodiversity and Genetic Resources Research Centre), together with the University of Porto, will host the 31st meeting of the Governing Board of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), an international network and research infrastructure funded by governments around the world to provide open access to data on all forms of life on Earth, available to anyone, anywhere.

During this event, the progress of the various committees and the GBIF International Secretariat will be presented and future strategies and developments of the organisation will be discussed. GBIF's prestigious annual awards will also be presented, including the 2024 GBIF Young Researcher Award and the Ebbe Nielsen Challenge.

The Young Researcher Award recognises innovative use of GBIF in biodiversity informatics by Masters or PhD students, while the Ebbe Nielsen Challenge rewards contributions from scientists, data modellers, software developers and other specialists. In 2023, current BIOPOLIS researcher André Vicente Liz was one of the winners of the Young Researcher Award.

The symposium 'Using GBIF to mainstream biodiversity in governments, the private sector and society' will take place on 2 October and will be divided into two parts: in the morning, an update on the progress of the GBIF Implementation Plan will be presented by the Secretariat; in the afternoon, experts and practitioners from different sectors will share their experiences in supporting policy responses and knowledge transfer that address society's pressing biodiversity and sustainability challenges. The event will take place at the Vairão Campus, CIBIO Auditorium, starting at 9.30 am. Participation in the symposium is open and free to the entire community, whether in person or virtually.
