CIBIO

A missão da CIBIO é desenvolver investigação de excelência a nível mundial, contribuindo para o aprofundamento do conhecimento científico nas áreas da biodiversidade e biologia da evolução, e aplicando este conhecimento para responder aos desafios societais relacionados com as alterações climáticas e do uso do solo, a degradação ambiental, a perda e utilização sustentável da biodiversidade e da agrobiodiversidade, e a gestão, restauração e utilização sustentável dos ecossistemas e dos seus serviços. Esta estratégia de investigação está fortemente em consonância com os objetivos nacionais e internacionais, incluindo a Estratégia Europa 2020 e o programa Horizonte 2020, os Objetivos de Desenvolvimento do Milénio, e a Agenda 2030 para o Desenvolvimento Sustentável. O CIBIO integra 196 investigadores doutorados ligados a várias universidades e institutos de investigação em Portugal e a uma Universidade em Angola. Existem 34 grupos de investigação, que estão organizados em três linhas temáticas: 1) Evolução, Genética e Genómica, 2) Biodiversidade, Ecologia e Conservação, e 3) Sustentabilidade, Ecossistemas e Ambiente. Estes grupos de investigação centram a sua atividade na biodiversidade e ecologia, biologia evolutiva e ecologia aplicada, e integram especialistas em campos complementares, tais como genética molecular e populacional, filogeografia, biologia populacional, imunogenética, taxonomia, ecologia, biologia funcional, bioinformática e biologia computacional, gestão e conservação da paisagem.

A investigação desenvolvida no CIBIO apresenta um elevado nível de internacionalização, estando a instituição e os seus investigadores estreitamente ligados em redes de colaboração com dezenas de universidades e centros de investigação de prestígio mundial. O CIBIO acolhe o primeiro Laboratoire International Associé (LIA; International Associated Laboratory) do CNRS em Portugal. Em 2014 foram formalizadas as fortes colaborações científicas entre o CIBIO e duas unidades de investigação conjuntas do CNRS e da Universidade de Montpellier, o ISEM (Institut des Sciences d l'Évolution de Montpellier) e o CEFE (Centre d'Ecologie Fonctionnelle et Evolutive), em três eixos de investigação em biologia evolutiva. Além disso, o CIBIO desenvolve projetos em todos os continentes, exceto na Antártida, e principalmente com foco na Bacia Mediterrânica, África e países lusófonos. O Programa de TwinLabs é uma iniciativa que consiste em estabelecer colaborações sólidas com cada um dos países africanos de língua portuguesa e com países vizinhos a estes, promovendo a investigação científica e a capacitação de recursos humanos e infraestrutural.

CIBIO’s mission is to develop world-class research in the area of biodiversity, advancing knowledge on the origins and maintenance of biodiversity, and applying this knowledge to address societal challenges related to climate and land use changes, environmental degradation, the loss and sustainable use of biodiversity and agrobiodiversity, and the management, restoration and sustainable use of ecosystems and their services. This research strategy is strongly aligned with national and international goals, including Europe’s 2020 Agenda and Horizon 2020 Strategy, the Millennium Development Goals, and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. CIBIO has 196 researchers with a PhD, which are based in several universities and research institutes across Portugal and in one University in Angola. There are 34 research groups, which are organised in three thematic lines on 1) Evolution, Genetics & Genomics, 2) Biodiversity, Ecology & Conservation, and 3) Sustainability, Ecosystems & the Environment. These research groups focus their activity on biodiversity and ecology, evolutionary biology and applied ecology, and integrate experts in complementary fields, such as molecular and population genetics, phylogeography, population biology, immunogenetics, taxonomy, ecology, functional biology, bioinformatics and computational biology, landscape management and conservation.

Research at CIBIO has a high level of internationalization, with the institution and its researchers being tightly connected in networks of collaborations with tens of top universities and research centres worldwide. CIBIO hosts the first Laboratoire International Associé in Portugal (LIA; International Associated Laboratory) from French CNRS, which formalized in 2014 the strong scientific collaborations between CIBIO and two joint research units from CNRS and University of Montpellier, ISEM (Institut des Sciences d l’Évolution de Montpellier) and CEFE (Centre d'Ecologie Fonctionnelle et Evolutive), in three research axes in evolutionary biology. Furthermore, research at CIBIO has a global scope, involving projects in all continents but Antarctica, although with a strong focus on the Mediterranean Basin, Africa and Portuguese-speaking countries. This has led to the development of a network of TwinLabs, mainly in Africa, which promotes scientific research and capacity building.
